what to see and do in madrid

Let´s admit it: we all love tapas. So we´ve decided to write this post about this food delight, and also tell you which tapas we love the most (and yes, we´ll tell you some Nakamad places where you could eat the best tapas in Madrid).

But…what is a tapa?

There are few theories about tapas origins, but specially like one of them: centuries ago, in bars and taverns, jars of wine or beer were covered with a tapa (Spanish word, literally, for a lid or a cover) to avoid flies and other insects getting inside. Later, food was also put on that tapa to go with the drink and…that´s the way one of the most famous Spanish culture items was born.

Having said that, let´s see some tapas you could (and you should) order in Madrid

Tortilla de patata (potatoes or Spanish omelette)

Potatoes, eggs, olive oil, salt and the eternal dilema: with or without onion. Can be served cooked or with a soupy inside (Betanzos style). Best tapas bars in Madrid for tortilla? A new Civil War can break out when deciding where is the best place to eat it…We´ll just say that Pez Tortilla makes omelettes filled with tasty and different ingredients, and are really tasty (watch out, it´s crowded and packed most of the time and it´s a bit expensive, but it worths it).

Patatas bravas

One of the few veggies options. They are bolied or fried potatoes with an spicy tomato sauce. Very tipycal in Madrid. If any bar dares to give you classic chips with ketchup instead of propper bravas…don´t be afraid of show your dissapointment! Best tapas bars in Madrid for patatas bravas? Battered cod

A few days ago we heard that this was “Madrid style fish & chips”. My Goodness… We don´t know what will think our Britons friends about it but…wanna check it by yourselves? Go to Casa Labra, a classic of the city. Then tell us what you think.

We think there´s no one in Madrid, or in Spain, or in the world that does not like croquettes. This delight made with white sauce or bechamel, battered and fried has lots of possible flavours: from classic cured ham, to boletus. Places with best tapas in Madrid, including croquettes? There it goes one of the secrets of Madrid: La parrilla de Nino. Go and order cod croquettes, and your life will NEVER be the same again…

Obviously, this is just a veeery tiny sample of all tapas you could order. Would you like having a customized Madrid tapas tour for eating the best tapas in Madrid? Hehe, of course you want.
